Format: Paperback
Grade Levels: 1; 2; 3; 4; 5; 6;
ISBN / Barcode: 9781038330376

Synopsis:

At Elk Falls on Vancouver Island, the children gather around the campfire, ready for one of Nana Kelly’s stories.

She tells them of a time, long ago, when dragons were born from the love of forest creatures and the flames from the Great Spirit’s fire. As the wood burned low, that love and warmth filled the logs—and the Great Spirit transformed them into glowing dragon hearts and heads. Lifted by the fire, the heads floated toward the falls, where only the rushing water could give them bodies and give them life.

But when the ancient forests were cut down, only one dragon remained. Lonely and full of sorrow, it wept—until one night, the dragon’s tear met a glowing ember . . .

Momo, carrying her heart in her mouth, must find her way to the falls before her small body fades. With help from the Princess of Peace and a river full of salmon, Momo races against time to complete her transformation into a dragon.

A story as old as the forests and the falls, Dragon’s Tears shows how love, courage, and the kindness of others can bring something beautiful back to life.

Reviews
"This book, written in nêhiyawiskwêw (Plains Cree) and English, explores the dream world. In Cree culture, the dragonfly is a symbol of transformation, change, and self-discovery. The dragonfly in the story explores various landscapes, from a modern construction area to the ocean. On every page, there are multiple visuals of Indigenous Traditions, from braided hair to evidence of cedar harvesting. The illustrations also show different examples of Indigenous people, with various skin tones. Younger students can explore the dream world through discussion and by creating images of their dreams. Although it is written for younger students, the book could serve as a starting point to explore Indigenous Ways of Knowing. At the back of the book, the author explains the significance of and Protocols around sharing dreams. There is also an activity sheet (a drawing activity and a discussion guide) to go with the book." - Alethea S., Elementary School Teacher, Indigenous Books for Schools

Words bawling…Melody howling…Fierce Voice rising

Iz has everything she's ever wanted: she’s found the foster home of her dreams and is attending the prestigious music school she moved heaven and earth to get into. But secrets from her past keep threatening to spill into the present, and Iz is sure that her newfound loved ones will abandon her if they learn of her terrible history.

Despite these fears, Iz does her best to settle into her new life. Hoping to give at-risk children the musical experiences she longed for when she was little, she joins with her classmates and Teo (the boy she sort of kissed and then ghosted all summer) to start a musical outreach program at the community centre she used to go to.

She isn’t quite prepared for the chaotic group of children she’s paired with. And she’s even less ready for Skye, an angry foster kid who challenges everything Iz holds dear, gets a little too close for comfort, and has her own terrible secret.

To help Skye, Iz must make a dreadful choice—a decision that could free them both from their demons or completely destroy everything Iz has fought so hard for. Is raising her voice worth the risk?

Fierce Voice is the sequel to the White Pine Award nominee Iz the Apocaylpse.
