Byrd Baylor
Byrd Baylor grew up in Tucson and wrote for the Tucson Citizen and City Magazine. She's written 25 children's books and a number of magazine articles. Her writings are centered on her love of the natural world, and specifically, the Sonoran Desert. Baylor lives in a simple, solar-powered house near Arivaca. She is at home with the southwestern desert cliffs and mesas, rocks, and open skies. The Tohono O'odham people, previously known as the Papagos, are her neighbours and close friends. Her driveway is a rutted, rock-filled track that meanders through the desert for several miles before arriving at her home. Reporter Mark Duggan scraped an oil pan several times, and almost got lost trying to find her house. But when he arrived, he found a gracious host. Byrd Baylor talked about her simple lifestyle, her early days in Tucson, her writing, and her love of nature.
