Abalone shells make excellent vessels for containing smoldering herbs and incense. It is wise to insulate the bottom of the shell with a minimum of 2 inches of sand or ash to protect the shell against high temperatures. These shells are often used for traditional cleansing ceremonies. They are ideal for burning sweetgrass and sage or indirect burning incense such as resin.

Place a few dried sage pieces or sweet grass in the bottom of the shell with the sand, ignite then blow out flame and the sage or grass will release a cloud of white, purifying smoke.

Returning of the Salmon
Long before humans came to be, the animals in the water frolicked together near the mouth of the Fraser River. Each year, the salmon journeyed out to sea and back to the same river, but they did not swim up the river, as their way was blocked by killer whales.

Then one year a baby salmon made friends with an otter. The otter picked up the baby salmon and, resting it on her stomach, began to swim up the river. As soon as the mother salmon noticed her baby was missing, she followed the otter up the river, swimming past the killer whales. The whole school of salmon followed her. At last the otter stopped and, when all the salmon caught up, this became their final spawning grounds.

To this day, salmon return with uncanny precision to the natal river where they were born, and even to the very spawning ground of their birth. For this reason, they represent determination, intuition and respect for tradition to the Musqueam people.

Israel Shotridge is one of Alaska’s finest Tlingit carvers. He is from Ketchikan, Alaska and belongs to the Bear Clan – the “Teikweidee.” For almost 30 years, Israel has accomplished many significant works of art. As an Alaskan Native Artist, Israel brings to his work the pride and sensitivity of his Indian heritage. Preserving the art of traditional Tlingit carving has been a natural for him. The sophisticated beauty of the Tlingit designs are highly regarded in the art world and his fine work is faithful to those traditional natural images.
